Automation changes the labour equation – it does not remove it.
In most warehouses, robotics and automation still depend on people to feed work in, manage exceptions and keep the operation flowing. That makes labour planning more important, not less.
In a manual operation, additional demand can sometimes be absorbed by adding more people. Automated environments are different. A sorter, shuttle, conveyor or robot has a defined capacity. Once part of the operation reaches that limit, adding labour elsewhere may simply move the bottleneck.
The challenge is to keep people, automation and workload in balance. Too little labour can starve expensive automation of work. Too much can add cost without improving throughput.
Fully autonomous warehouses may exist at the edge. For most operators, the reality is increasingly automated operations where human decisions still determine performance.
The more constrained the physical operation becomes, the more important it is to make labour decisions earlier, with a clear view of capacity, productivity, service and cost.
Better technology matters. Better decisions make it work.
